    • Obituary of Reuben Thomas Kingman
News of the death of R.T. Kingman at Carroll, Iowa has been received. He was afflicted for some time and suffered much in his later years. Mr. Kingman became a resident of Carroll, 26 years ago and up to ten years ago he followed his trade as carpenter. The funeral ws held last week Tuesday, Rev. J. w. Taylor of the M. E. church officiating. Reuben T. Kingman was born in Smyrna, Chenango County, New York May 5, 1823. He was therefore 86 years, two months, and twenty-two days old at his death. (27 July 1909).

From the old home in New York state, departed and his parents removed to Plattville, Kendall County, Illinois and there he was married May 7, 1843, to Miss Eleanor Ricketson, who survives him at the advanced age of 84 years. To them were born nine children, the survivors of whom residing now as follows: Oren Kingman, Beattie, Kansas; Julia D. Bogart, Mazon, Illinois; Elma (Mrs. William Allen, Carroll, Iowa; Perry Kingman, Morris, Illinois; Fred Kingman, San Pierre, Indiana; Elizabeth Coleman, Atwood, Kansas, Will Kingman, Blencoe, Iowa. Two sons are dead, Charles Kingman dying at Avoca, Iowa March 11, 1909 and James, so well remembered here, March 15, 1900.

Mr, Kingman, who was a veteran of the civil war, came of an old fighting family. His grandfathers were both wounded in the battle of Bunker Hill; his father and two uncles were soldiers in the War of 1812 against England, while departed, a son and two son-in-law, fought in the civil war, the last three all wounded and drawing pensions. Mr Kingman enlisted in Co., B., 127. Ill. Vol. at Chicago, Aug. 13, 1862. His regiment raced to join the "Board of Trade" regiment and get a share of the big bounty offered, but was two hours late. That fall their regiment was sent to Memphis and was with Sherman in the first attack on Vicksburg. At Holly Springs while guarding some prisoners, he fell into an old well, injuring his left hip so as to leave him lame for the rest of his life. It was at this point that their division was captured and held for several hours by Van Dorn. In the same action a bullet carried away his cap and knocked him down. He remained with Sherman until after Vicksburg fell, and then was sent north to the hospital at Keokuk, Iowa. He rejoined Sherman at Goldsboro in 1864. In spite of his partial disability he insisted in serving his enlistment and took part in the Grand Review at the close of the war, being then mustered out at Chicago.

Reuben and Eleanor appear in the 1850 Franklin Twp., Kendall Co., Illinois census with three children. They are Horace age 6, Orrin age 4 and Julia age 2. I show Horace as having probably died in the year of his birth in 1844 but this could be in error. Reuben's occupation is shown as a farmer.

They appear in the 1860 Mazon, Grundy Co., Illinois census with children Orrin age 14, Julia age 12, Elma age 9, Charley age 8, Sarah age 6, June age 5 and Fred age 3. If the first census is correct then Horace must have died between 1850 and 1860 between the ages of 6 and 16. This is curious in that I have no other record of there ever being a Sarah. However, I do have an Elizabeth of about the same age and also a Perry Victor who should have appeared. Reuben's occupation is shown as a carpenter.

Reuben seems to appear in the 1870 Otto, Kankakee Co., Illinois census with children Perry age 16, Fred age 12, Elizabeth age 8 and James age 1. His age is wrong however as he is shown as 41 when he was actually 47. Also Eleanor who was 46 at the time is not listed but there is a Mary age 34 keeping house. Her last name is Kingman and she is born in New York. Also two of the younger boys are not listed even though the youngest one, James age 1 is listed. Perry is shown as 16 when he would have been 14. I never heard of Rueben living in Kankakee Co., Illinois although it is possible. It shows Reuben's occupation as "Meat Market".

Reuben and Eleanor appear in the 1880 Mazon, Grundy Co., Illinois census with James and either William or Walley but I cannot read the writing. Reuben's occupation is now shown as a teamster.

Reuben and Eleanor appear in the 1900 Mazon Twp., Grundy Co., Illinois census as borders living with their daughter Julia and son-in-law Edward Bogart. Since Reuben's 1909 obituary says that he and Eleanor had moved to Carroll, Iowa 27 years earlier, or around 1881, they must have been just visiting in Mazon at the time of the census.
