  • Notes
    • Abednego Ricketson, son of Judith Ricketson, born 16 may 1756, Dutchess County, New York, died October, 1825 Ausable, New York, married Martha Soule, daughter of George and Lydia (Howland) Soule, born 16 October, 1764, died 1857, at 94 years.

The family tradition is that Abednego's father was an officer in the British Army. His grandfather, Timothy Ricketson, lived for a time in Dutchess County, after leaving Dartmouth and before going to Georgia; indeed the Poughkeepsie deeds show that he was in Dutchess County in 1754, two years before the birth of Abednego. We have no clue as to what became of Abednego's mother Judith, who presumably named her son for her eldest brother, Abednego of Annapolis, Nova Scotia.

Abednego himself was in the 4th. Regiment, Dutchess County Militia, and was entitled to Land Bounty Rights. He was a farmer and lived at Peru, Clinton County, New York, during the last part of his life.
According to Grace Williamson Ede Abednego appears in the New York Census for 1790 gives his residence as Watervliet, Albany County; his household then consisting of 1 male, over 16; 3 males under 16; 2 females. I can't find it.

His granddaughter, Mrs. John K. LeBaron, (born Phebe Ferris) thus recalls him: "My recollection of grandfather Ricketson is of a very fine looking gentleman, dressed in Quaker style; broad-brimmed hat and drab coat with very long vest and breeches buckled at the knee, with low shoes with large buckles, and grandmother with long kid gloves or mitts meeting her short sleeves above the elbow and plain cap and kerchief with a little drab shawl tied over her shoulders."

Abednego Ricketson made his will 26 day of 8th. mo. 1825, at Peru. He left to his beloved Martha all hos homestead "furnature" and the remainder of his property save for certain legacies during her life or while she remained a widow, when it was to be divided by giving $2.00 to a son, and $1.00 to a daughter and in that manner to be divided save the "portion falling to my daughter, Lydia Ferris I assing (sic) to remain in the hands of my Executors for them to deal out to her or her heirs as they shall deem necessary." He left to his son Stephen one yoke of oxen and sheep, to James one "Hors," one yoke of oxen and eight sheep; to William one "hors", one "pare" of oxen and eight sheep and to Abednego same. The will was signed with his mark and proved 15 October 1825.

Abednego Ricketson and his wife belonged to the Orthodox sect of Quakers. Their granddaughter, Mrs. LeBaron, already quoted, writes that he and his wife are buried "about five miles west of Lake Champlain and six miles north of Plattsburg in a place called the Union, probably from the fact that the Hixite and Prthodox Quakers for sometime used the same meeting house, one branch of the sect meeting in the forenoon and the other in the afternoon of First day, and aparently they also shared the Burial Ground, where as was the custom, the graves of Abenego and wife were unmarked by any stone."

Louise Throop says that there are records that show tha Abednego was in Watervliet, Schenectady Co., New York in 1790 and in Peru, Clinton Co., New York in 1800.
